Yesterday Engadget published an internal memo from Nokia CEO Stephen Elop where he says; “We too, are standing on a “burning platform,” and we must decide how we are going to change our behavior”. The increasing competition from iOS and Android devices are clearly hurting Nokia. Elop’s conclusion is that the ecosystem around iOS and Android devices is the key factor to their success.
There are several comments on the memo by other sites. The most frequent one is around a rumor that Nokia will announce a new strategy on February 11th and that it will involve Microsoft and Nokia joining forces to meet the competition.

Google will push WebM
In a recent announcement Google has said that they will drop the support for H.264 as the format for the video tag in HTML5 in favor of the open (their own) format WebM in Google Chrome. WebM was launched at last year’s Google I/O and is built on Vp8. However this is not entirely unproblematic. Experts claim that Google will end up in the same situation that Microsoft did when they opened up Windows Media as VC-1. Both Windows Media and WebM are built on a number of patents controlled by the MPEG license authority that also controls and licenses H.264. Appleinsider has posted an article detailing the issues at hand.
