MPS launches revolutionary Peer-to-peer technology for distributing video online
To overcome today’s distribution challenges, MPS has funded the development of a revolutionary new P2P video distribution technology. With this new technology, MPS can offer lower costs, more concurrent viewers and better quality than existing solutions.

The technology builds upon the research at KTH and SICS’ Distributed Computing Lab - an unique mathematical algorithm which can arrange the nodes in a P2P network in an optimal way - resulting in a dramatic increase in network and distribution efficiency.

MPS has the exclusive right to distribute online video with this new peer-to-peer technology.  Large-scale testing is scheduled for completion during the fall.

“High volumes of concurrent viewers and quality of service will be critical to take on line video to the next level. This initiative is part of a long term strategy to establish MPS as the leading Online Video ASP provider”, said Anders Nilsson, CEO, MPS Broadband.

The Swedish Hockey League launches a new Web-TV service
The Swedish Hockey League, organizer of the top hockey league "Elitserien", and MPS Broadband, the leading provider of broadband video services today announced that they have decided to extend their business relation.

A new agreement means that all Swedish hockey clubs will be able to start their own TV channel on the Internet.

MPS Broadband and the Swedish Hockey League have been cooperating for several years and with the new contract they will extend their business relation. MPS Broadband will provide the technical platform that makes it possible for all hockey clubs in Sweden to start their own, web–TV channel through Yellow.TV.

In the beginning, the service will only include the clubs in the top league "Elitserien", but the ambition is to make the service grow, and over time include all the hockey clubs in Sweden.

– Broadband video is growing fast and more companies, organizations and end–users publish video content on the Internet. Our solutions make it easy for anyone to publish broadband video. Thanks to our platform and infrastructure it is now possible for the Swedish hockey clubs and their supporters to communicate with each other, in a way that has not been possible before, said Mattias Sjöberg, CEO of MPS Broadband.

The new service will go live when the autumn season starts and will include, among other things, clips from the games, interviews, training material and "behind the scenes" clips.

– The hockey clubs in Sweden are already on the forefront of web–TV. By working with MPS Broadband we are now able to provide a tool that makes it easy to publish and distribute exclusive material with coaches, players and others, said Peter Gudmundson, CEO of the Swedish Hockey League.

– We also hope that this effort will mean that material from, for example the junior hockey leagues, will be highlighted and therefore receive a natural forum, Peter Gudmundson continued.

World Premiere for Yellow.TV at MIPTV
Yellow.TV had world premiere at MIPTV in Cannes and it was a success from the start. Already, after the first two days, Yellow.TV has over 400 new channels registered.

Yellow.TV is a brand new service from MPS Broadband that is ideal to increase brand loyalty, to communicate with customers and to keep up with recent trends. The service works both as an online directory for digital content and as a global broadband video service, allowing small and medium sized enterprises and organizations around the world, to publish and share self–generated content with their customers. On their own TV–Channels.

The beta version of Yellow.TV was warmly met by the attending media companies at MIPTV, with over 400 channels registered after the first two days.

– We had high expectations and had set high targets for Yellow.TV during MIPTV, but despite this we are overwhelmed by the response we have had. It has taken a long time, but we now feel that the media industry has decided that it is time to commit to Broadband Video, says Johan Frisch, Group Commercial Director, MPS Broadband AB.

As a channel owner you get a share of the revenue stemming from the viewers of your channel, and the channels will contain two types of video content:

Self–generated content is content that the Yellow TV Publisher/Channel owner has produced themself. Free–to–publish content is content that is created and owned by someone else, typically a larger content and/or brand owner. Free–to–publish content is managed by MPS and offered as a part of the service to Yellow TV Publishers. Therefore a channel owner can start a channel full of programmes without having to produce a large number of clips.

The International Interactive Emmy® awards are presented by the largest organization of broadcasters in the world, The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Every year, the International Emmy® Awards recognise excellence in programming produced outside of the United States, and at MIPTV three Emmy® Awards will be presented. These are Interactive Programme, Interactive Channel and Interactive TV Service.

As a leading provider of technical solutions and services and the only partner necessary for content in broadband and mobile environments, MPS Broadband is a natural sponsor of The International Emmy® Awards.

MPS debates the future of online media with Google, AOL and CNET
MPS today participated in a panel discussion on how the media balance-of-power is likely to shift. The panelists agreed that the structures in the media industry are changing at their fundaments

Mattias Sjöberg, CEO of the MPS Broadband group, participated in the Opening Keynote Panel at Realscreen Summit together with senior executives from Google, AOL and CNET. One major issue that was discussed, was how the media balance-of-power is likely to shift as new media becomes more mainstream.

What is MPS Broadband´s standpoint in this matter?

"When we started MPS in 2002, the big question was how the PC could enter into the living room. Five years later, the big question is how TV content shall get into the PC… Yes, it is a huge change in process, a change that will alter the way in which we consume media, and where we consume media. Regarding the on-demand media supply, MPS believes that a mixture of user-generated and professional content is the key to success. Hence, the content providers will have a lot to gain from playing their cards right…"

Does a viable solution exist, to turn enormous hits into financial stability? Or will consumers abandon the media when they are asked to reach for their wallet?

"Based on MPS´ customers´ online media sales growth 2004-2006, I dare saying that consumers do not refrain from consuming commercial content. According to today´s edition of USA Today, online media advertising last year generated approx. $26 bn. In parallel, the methodology for compiling and structuring complex consumer behavioral data is continuously improving, hence the potential in preference-based marketing is huge."

Current mass fragmentation will most likely eventually lead to consolidation: In 5 years, who will create and distribute video experiences?

"The difference between professional and User Generated Content ("UGC") will gradually diminish; the "big productions" will be mixed with "niche content". The aggregators will still be needed, but the big question is; who are they? Is it communities like YouTube, MySpace and Yellow TV? Is it the telcos who deliver complete packages including access, voice, content etc? Is it the hardware manufactureres like HP, Apple, Motorola etc? Or is it simply the big content owners themselves? No one knows. At MPS, we are prepared for different scenarios, something everyone involved in creation and delivery of digital media needs to be."

What role will users have in media moving forward? So much ink has been spilt on Web 2.0 that it´s taken as a given that users want to play an active role in their media – but is it only a certain demo slice? Will the vast majority of media consumers still want to remain passive?

"We believe it is time for the next step; until now, UGC has mostly been about funny clips on a website. As we move into the next stage, the world of UGC will need to develop dramatically to retain interested and engaged consumers. At this stage we will see how passive one is."

So, what about portable devices, will people really watch full length programming on their phone?

"Video content will most certainly be viewed on portable devices to a greater extent in the future. MPS also believes that the cellphone will serve as a video camera, and a tool to create and publish video content".

Another topic that was being discussed among the panelists was whether 2007 will be the year that the creator gets paid? YouTube was sold for $1.65 billion and those who supplied the content that drove the audience, and ultimately the sale, made nothing. Will that change?

"Yes, it will change, it has taken a long time, but we can now finally see that the money will end up with the creators of the content. MPS launches two new services during the spring, MyChannel™ and Yellow.TV™, where the content owners will be the great winners."

What is My Channel and Yellow TV?

"My Channel and Yellow TV are MPS´ brand new communities for end–users, content providers and advertisers, containing" professional content" as well as "self-produced content". As a channel owner you get a share of the revenue stemming from the viewers of your channel. Both services are ideal to increase brand loyalty, to communicate with customers and to keep up with recent trends." MPS has entered into agreements with creators, content rights owners and strategic partners for launch during Spring 2007.

My Channel™ takes user-generated content to the next level
This is merely the beginning

YouTube has been around for quite some time now. And sure, it has been a great start for the user-generated content revolution. But this is merely the beginning. With My Channel™, MPS Broadband is ready to take user-generated content to the next level.

Until now, user-generated content has mostly been about funny clips on a website. As we move into the next stage, the world of user-generated content will develop dramatically, and become incorporated into the "traditional" media and entertainment business. Richer and more diversified user-generated content will revolutionize how we experience media.

MPS´ objective with launching My Channel™ is to be the leading provider of technical solutions needed to support this revolution.

The My Channel™ Concept
My Channel™ is a turn key solution, designed for Service Operators (e.g. Internet service providers, sports federations and media corporations) who wish to provide their own online media service for user-generated content. This will enable a wider range of players to engage new individual publishers in their respective communities and customer bases, with unforeseen marketing and real time advertising opportunities.

My Channel™ is an ideal way to increase brand loyalty, to communicate with customers and to keep up with recent trends. MPS Broadband is currently in the process of finalizing My Channel™ agreements with several major Internet service providers and other media enterprises around the world for launch early in 2007.

In 2004, My Channel™ was one of only three European projects selected to receive financial contribution from the (European Union) MEDIA Plus programme, as support to Pilot Projects. The pilot projects constitute the way in which the Council Decision ensures that the MEDIA Plus programme takes account of rapid technological change.

TeliaSonera launches movie download service in Finland
Warner Bros, one of the world´s largest Hollywood studios and entertainment companies, opens up to the possibility for legal download of movies and TV-series in Finland together with MPS Broadband, film2home and Sonera.

On film2home.fi or through Sonera´s service you can get movies in two different ways.  For more than a year it has been possible to rent and watch a movie directly via the broadband connection.  To rent a movie costs 2–4 EUR per 24 h and it is possible to stop, pause and watch the movie as many times as you want.  The movie starts directly and the quality depends on how fast the broadband connection is.  A minimum of 1Mb is required to get good quality.

The new revolutionizing way is that it is now also possible to download movies to own. If you want to keep the movie more than 24 h, it is from this week also possible to download and buy a digital copy of the movie, which is then downloaded to the hard drive.  Once on the computer the movie can be seen as many times as you want and at any time.  The price for a download is from 10 EUR to approximately 15 EUR for the newest titles.  The download time depends on how fast the broadband connection is and how long the movie is.  An average download can take up to one hour.

The service is reached either by www.film2home.fi or going into www.sonera.fi/viihde

The files that are downloaded from film2home is in standard definition which is the same high picture- and sound quality as a DVD.

– We have chosen to offer movies with a guaranteed high picture quality and text. We believe that people are willing to pay for the convenience and quality they get with this service. You also get personal help from our customer support if any problems occur with the download, says Gerard Versteegh at film2home.

There are different ways to easily connect a cable between your computer and the TV and also use your surround system. The possibilities are many. The technology is here, now it is time to fill the home entertainment system with content without leaving the home.

Warner Bros launches Download-to-Own service in Sweden
Warner Bros opens the possibility for legal download of premium movies and TV-series in Sweden together with film2home. MPS Broadband delivers the technical solution.

- It is very pleasing that we now can offer movies in this new format together with film2home, says Lars Håkansson, Managing Director Nordic at Warner Home Video Nordic.

- We are extremely happy that Warner has chosen us as a partner and that they have come this far in the digital world. Their catalogue is extremely strong and an important step for us in building a large catalogue with high quality movies, says Gerard Versteegh, founder of film2home.

Apart from the possibility to stream movies via broadband, visitors to film2home can also download movies to their computers and portable devices. The consumer buys a digital copy of the movie which is downloaded onto a hard drive and can be seen any number of times at any time, just like when buying a DVD. Some films will also be offered with a separate bonus file for transferring the movie to a portable media player. The service from film2home is the first of it´s kind in Scandinavia, and the technology that makes this possible is provided by MPS Broadband.

This week, we release films such as Harry Potter and the goblet of fire, Batman Begins, Charlie and the chocolate factory, V for Vendetta, Matrix, Troy, says Lars Håkansson. Our ambition is to deliver a complete library of films.

So far, there are approximately 600 movies available for streaming or download at film2home, but the number of titles grows each day and when more studios open up for their movies to be distributed this way.

The files that are downloaded from film2home have the same high picture- and sound quality as a DVD. The possibilities are many. The technology is here, now it is time to fill the home entertainment system with content without leaving the home.

MPS Broadband teamed up with Alcatel to deliver America’s Cup Broadband TV in 2006
MPS demonstrated its capabilities in delivering online TV services of high-profile sports events to a worldwide audience by providing the platform for Alcatel, the Official New Media Provider of the 32nd America’s Cup, to deliver America’s Cup Broadband TV.

Americas Cup Broadband TV, which was available at www.americascup.com between May-July 2006, featured 26-minute daily highlight programmes covering the Valencia Louis Vuitton Acts 2006. Sailing fans in certain territories were also able to stream live coverage of the semi-finals and finals of the Valencia Louis Vuitton Act 12.

A requirement of the service was to restrict the availability of some of the content in territories where broadcast rights agreements for the 32nd America’s Cup were in place. In these territories, the live webcasts were blocked while the daily highlights were made available after a 72-hour embargo.

As well as the daily highlights and live webcasts, Americas Cup Broadband TV offered behind-the-scenes programming and archive footage. Access was open to consumers via a ‘day pass’ or ‘season ticket’.

The Americas Cup Broadband TV service illustrated the flexibility of the MPS Publishing Platform™ (MPP). Scott Robinson of Alcatel New Media added, “Americas Cup Broadband TV is a great example of how rights holders can reach a worldwide audience using live and on-demand streaming to complement traditional television coverage. MPS’s ability to restrict access to streamed content according to territory is fundamental to the success of this project.”

“Alcatel’s choice of MPS as a supplier to build and operate Americas Cup Broadband TV in 2006 is a testament to the robustness, simplicity and flexibility of the MPS Publishing Platform™.”

MPS launches My Station™ in Windows Media Center in United Kingdom
Microsoft has signed up seven new services for the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (MCE).

The seven services for the Online Spotlight section comprise: BBC News, TvOnTime, KMS Software
and the Swedish company MPS Broadband provides a number new media on demand services.
These are: Fashion TV (taken daily from the TV channel), Trace TV (an "urban music" channel), WildFile
(nature documentaries and science) and Easy Karaoke.

"We´re seeing great momentum behind our vision for cutting edge digital entertainment on the PC", said Windows Client Marketing Manager at Microsoft UK, David Weeks. MCE is not only giving easy access
to new forms of content from the comfort of their sofa, but also enabling the content industry to offer
innovative new services.

Weeks also previewed the Media Center Extender Technology that is part of the Xbox 360. The software fleshes out Microsoft´s concept of home networking – through a wireless connection the Xbox can provide access to the media Center – and thus television, music and movies – from another room in the house, even if it is in use at the time. Weeks said the Xbox provided a full implementation of the extender software. In other words, full access to the Media Center platform should be supported.
